Every other Wednesday night is ladies’ night for me and my girlfriends. We shoo the boys off to the sports pubs so that we can catch up with each other’s lives and current events. Most ladies’ nights we stay in and indulge in great food and wine — unless, of course, it’s Mexican night (I’m a sucker for a theme!). Then Jose is invited over to mix up some top-shelf margaritas.

But last Wednesday, we wanted to get out of the house and light up the town, so I decided to host a pre-game makeup party with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to become friends with a local makeup artist named John Dye during a project we worked on for ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Several months later, while driving to Volume One Salon to get dolled up for the Hip Huggers Ball with friends, I walked in and was pleasantly surprised to find that the girls had hired him to do our makeup for the event. I was so excited because I had seen how amazing he was on the set with cast members from “Extreme Makeover.” I found out later that he has also done makeup for artists such as Taylor Swift and has been featured on MTV and in music videos, commercials and the globally distributed Star Magazine. John’s philosophy is that “makeup is color, and color is color! So it’s not the product you use, or how much you spent on it … its how you apply it.”

To host a successful makeup party, you need three key ingredients: Cosmo cocktails, flirty treats and John Dye. We were all taught by the older women in our families to apply the basics in order to walk out of the house and not look like a hot mess; however, the nighttime scene is ever-changing and is full of different makeup styles that grandma knows nothing about.

Hosting a makeup event will unlock the secrets to the smoky eye and teach you how to pull off a pouty red lip. Of course, smoky eyes aren’t for the office, but when it comes to hitting the dance floor, nothing will make you feel more like a diva. Hiring Dye to host your makeup party depends upon availability, and pricing depends upon the number of girls at the party. For more information, check him out on Facebook at John Dye Makeup Artist.

Before Dye and the girls arrived, I set up a presentable display of savory, homemade mini quiches and salmon crisps along with various cheeses and fruits. I wanted to keep the menu light and bite-sized so not to smear our fresh, pouty lipstick. As far as cocktails are concerned, instead of serving a traditional Cosmo, I decided to make White Cosmopolitans. White Cosmos are simple and delicious. Made with white cranberry juice instead of red, this cocktail is sure to delight your taste buds and keep your whites bright and your smile showstopping.

Once the girls arrived, Dye did a short tutorial on different makeup techniques and then got started on the individual makeovers. On top of being a great makeup artist, Dye is a comedian with a blush brush. You will never laugh so hard in your life, but don’t crack a smile when it’s eyeliner time unless you’re looking for that Catwoman effect.

Plan your party to allow enough time to ensure that all the girls get their makeup done. The average amount of time per girl is 15 minutes, so starting around 6 p.m. will put you on the dance floor by 9 p.m. if you have no more than 10 girls.

Once our hair was fluffed and our makeup was flawless, we felt more than confident, so we hit up downtown scene.

Whether you’re a full-time career woman or full-time mom — and especially if you’re both — it is always important to find some time for yourself and the girls to recharge the diva batteries. A week of laundry and deadlines can weigh you down, but it is nothing a little blush and a Cosmo can’t fix.

March 31st marked the one year since the day I was lying on a sandy beach in Puerto Rico and my future husband proposed to me. I will never forget that day, and as of now, it has been the best moment of my life. I say “as of now” because on October 15, I will say “I do” to the greatest man I know!

As I reflected about these wonderful moments, I started thinking about the many celebrations that occur before the big “I do.” My favorite so far would have to be the engagement party we threw when we returned home.

My fiancé and I took care of all the costs and planning for our party, and like most young engaged couples, we were on a tight budget. We saved money by doing almost everything ourselves — from the venue to the food to how we planned for the big event.

We had a wonderful opportunity to host a launch party last month for the “Let’s Grow” project. The event was held on our deck. Lucas Crutchfield provided live music. A silent auction was held with many donations from local businesses. Some highlights of the auction were a Pandora bracelet, multiple gift baskets, tickets to area events and art pieces. The Fish House provided appetizers. Check out photos of the event on our Facebook page.

The group so far has raised over $30,000 in funds to support its project. These funds have gone to create gardens in five area schools. The group’s goal is to have all of gardens built by the end of March 2011.

PERFECT PARTIES: It’s easy to let the good times roll

Mardi Gras has been around for centuries, becoming one of the biggest celebrations to date. It manifests the essence of New Orleans’ nickname, The Big Easy, and sums up the expression “laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll). The best thing about Mardi Gras, whether you are holding out for Fat Tuesday or catching every parade that rolls down the street, is the traditional food and spirits and the many, many excuses to throw a party!

Hosting a party for Mardi Gras can be done in many different ways. This year, I am throwing a Mardi Gras-inspired Sunday brunch for my friends before we all head out to enjoy the Krewe of Wrecks Mardi Gras Parade on Pensacola Beach. With everything that comes along with the parade, I thought it best to be as prepared as we could be by filling up on a great New Orleans-style brunch.

The beach parade kicks off at 2 p.m. To give all of us enough time to pack up and get over the bridge, I am going to have guests arrive at 10 a.m. for bloody marys, mimosas and beignets.

This year, I’m going to branch out and prepare some traditional brunch recipes with a Louisiana twist. We brunch enthusiasts all love the classic version of eggs Benedict, but to jazz it up a bit, replace the hollandaise sauce by sautéing up some delicious crawfish étouffée and pouring it over your Benedict. This will surely be a crowd pleaser.

PERFECT PARTIES: Perk up your party with paint

One part canvas, two parts vodka.

The only thing you need for this party idea is a group of good friends, a few blank canvases, paints and brushes and, of course, a bottle of Van Gogh Vodka.

A paint party is the perfect way to fill the blank walls in your house with some original art created by your friends. This party is simple, fun and can be done for a variety occasions including showers, birthday parties and girls’ nights in.

Setting up such an event is easy. First, you need to find the best room in your house to gather your guests so they will each have enough space to work in. I use the dining room in my house, and simply cover the table with a drop cloth to protect the finish.

Once you have your room picked out, the next step is to set out the supplies. Place brushes, an 8-by-8-inch canvas and small paper cups filled with water at each station. Provide each guest with a paper plate to collect color paint samples to use for their projects. I suggest using acrylic paint. It’s thick enough not to run, and it dries fast, so you can paint over any mistakes. Paint and other supplies can be picked up from Bobe’s Hobby House, a local craft store at 5719 North W Street.

Now that your guests have all the materials they need, you can set the mood for inspiration. I recommend putting on some of your favorite music while sipping the sophisticated Van Gogh Espresso Vodka. For those who are not coffee drinkers, Van Gogh Vodka comes in many other flavors, such as Dutch caramel, raspberry and vanilla.

The last time I hosted girls’ night in, I decided to theme it around a paint party. Most girls’ nights we stay in, cook dinner and watch “American Idol” while we chat about our week. This time, we Tivoed “Idol” to try something different.

Once the girls came over, we made our cocktails and began stroking the brushes across the canvases. Although none of us are up-and-coming artists, sometimes — as in life — it’s funny … even though you don’t have exact directions to where you’re going, you find yourself ending up exactly where you want to be.

After the paintings are finished, display them for everyone to see. On this particular night, we had decided to invite our significant others to come over after the painting session. The guys joined us for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while we unveiled our works of art.

When selecting your menu, be sure to incorporate simple finger-food items like the ones they serve in big gallery openings. A few fancy and delicious appetizers will set the mood for your at-home gallery. Choose imported cheeses and meats, small crisps with salmon mousse or anything that fits on a napkin that you can pick up and go. The perfect place to find some of these items, if you want to avoid the hassle of doing it yourself, is Wine World Wine Bar, 16 Palafox Place. This place has a huge variety of specialty cheeses and meats, and if you time it right, you can sample some fine vino from around the world.

After the party is over, you are left with fond memories and great stories to tell. As time passes, noticing the art on your walls will remind you of your friends and how much fun it was to branch out and do something different — and it may also inspire a repeat get-together.

Until next time, friends, party on!

PERFECT PARTIES: Special birthdays require extra-planning

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

MELISSA MARTIN • SPECIAL TO THE NEWS JOURNAL • JANUARY 5, 2011

I have been planning parties for many years, and a few months ago, I felt guilty when I realized I had never planned a special birthday party for my fiancé. I told him that this year, his 25th birthday was going to be amazing! He laughed and said, “Sounds great! Too bad I turned 25 last year.”

Needless to say, I had completely forgotten, and to make up for it, I already am planning his 30th birthday.

Although I can’t help you remember all those special dates, I can offer tips to make those celebrations extra special when you do. Here are a few ideas from three milestone birthdays I have planned. I hope you can take a few ideas and incorporate them in your own special someone’s birthday.

To date, my ultimate favorite birthday party would have to be a coworker’s 50th birthday party that I planned with friends last year. Some of these ideas are perfect for small gatherings at lunchtime (so that guests can make it back to work if needed).

To start, our friend’s wife sent us a great photo of him and we made poster-size signs with the blown-up photo. On the top we printed “Happy 50th Birthday” and on the bottom printed, “In lieu of gifts, please give HUGS.” This provided a nice laugh for all of us, considering that our friend, at first glance, is one of the most intimidating men you could ever come across. The signs were hung in the front of our restaurant and in the elevators of the main office. When our friend arrived at work at the crack of dawn, he already knew what kind of day he was in for!
