Chronicles of an Intern: Final Chapter

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

jennifer allenI just realized that I have less than a week left here at the Great Southern Restaurant Group. This realization has generated many emotions, or perhaps it is delirium, as I near my 10th hour in the workday. Either way, I am truly sad to wave goodbye to such a wonderful four months.

What is an internship and what is the point of one? Technically, the purpose of an internship is to gain hands-on experience in the field of work you are interested in pursuing. Realistically, in the field of public relations and marketing, there is a plethora of positions to shadow. Lucky for me, I sought a pretty fantastic one!

What I Thought Would Happen

To give you a background on how I came about interning with Shelley Yates at The Fish House would be the polite thing to do. (more…)

Chronicles of an Intern #2

Jennifer_the-internSince I last introduced myself, the lessons of this intern have been rolling out at high speed. Again, let me reiterate one of my last principles: “Life isn’t by the book.” Well, this internship certainly doesn’t follow any textbook that I’ve come across. Each day continues to push me and challenge my view of the public relations and marketing field.

Lesson One: The power of a Danish

When you have the governors of both Florida and Alabama on Pensacola Beach at 5 o’clock in the morning, something big must be happening. That something big was a live taping of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” I don’t know about you, but if I had to be awake and ready to talk about our coastal crisis at 5 a.m., I would need more than a venti latte to get me going. Shelley and I figured the best way to showcase the best of Pensacola at the crack of dawn would be to bring a huge box of fresh J’s Bakery Danishes to Joe Scarborough, Mika, and their crew. It’s a Southern tradition to always bring a little gift when invited to visit someone. It always makes the person who invited you glad they did. I learned this lesson from my mother, when we would visit friends and family. I didn’t realize that same lesson was applicable in the business world.

intern1According to Mr. Webster, an intern is defined as “an advanced student or graduate usually in a professional field gaining supervised practical experience.” Honestly, I was hoping to make a sarcastic remark about how off the mark he is, but I really can’t. As I start my internship with The Pensacola Fish House, I hope that this definition is right on the dot.

Many people hear the word “intern” and their mind immediately jumps to coffee runs, collating and stapling, and essentially finishing the tail end of leftover work. In the two weeks that I have been interning at The Fish House, none of the previously listed tasks have come across my to-do list, luckily! Contrary to spins from television and Hollywood, I hope to be learning through the act of doing.

I truly believe that we can learn as many theories, formulations, or writing styles as possible, but nothing compares to applying our knowledge in a real-world situation. Since starting my public relations and marketing experience with Shelley Yates, I have realized how crucial participating in an internship is to my professional success.

I should probably introduce myself. My name is Jennifer Allen, and I am a senior at the University of West Florida majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Marketing. I will graduate with my degree in December, and it could not come soon enough. I love running, spending time with family and friends, and reading a great book at the beach.

As I begin my journey as an intern, I hope to live by the following principles:
