Good Grits Girls bake for a good cause. bake-off

Tuesday, October 25, 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Twelve Good Grits Girls, employees of the Great Southern Restaurant Group (The Fish House, Atlas Oyster House and Jackson’s Steakhouse), will join together on the Fish House Deck to submit over 1000 cupcakes to the public for judging. The winner will be crowned the Great Southern Cupcake Queen. Judges are our own Great Southern pastry chefs Trina Confusione (Fish House) and Miko Franklin (Jackson’s Steakhouse), and Partners/Owners Mrs. Collier (Cate) Merrill and Pensacola Celebrity Chef Jim Shirley.

People’s Choice: The public will pay 5 dollars for a chance to taste all of the cupcakes. Cupcake tasters will receive two voting tickets. After tasting cupcakes at each station, the guests will leave their tickets with their favorite baker. The baker who has the most cards will win people’s choice. Prizes for the winner will be donated by the restaurant.

100% of the tasting fees will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Judges will announce their choice along with the crowd’s favorite at 6:30 p.m.

Door Prizes: Provided for attending guests by area boutiques and salons such as Style Downtown and Escape Wellness Spa.

Drink Specials: Pomegranate and ginger martinis and pink sparkling wine.

Entertainment: Provided by Lucas Crutchfield.

We are all very competitive when it comes to our baking skills. We frequently bring in a new baking recipe for each other to try. We thought that making it a fun event and tying it to such a cause as breast cancer, particularly during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, would be an ideal way to have fun doing what we love for a cause we believe in. We hope that people will come and enjoy the evening with us. “It’s just a few days before the breast cancer walk on Saturday, so in a way it’s our own little pep rally,” says Lindsey Voorhees, a Fish House manager.

The Grits Girl explores the Who, What and Huh? — of cooking this holiday season.

It’s that time of year again. The holiday season. Most folks get in a real panic over what to serve. The Grits Girl keeps it simple. I order to go.

Some people like to make holiday dinners fancy. I’ve seen these recipes with highfalutin’ names, usually in French or Latin. Personally, the Grits Girl doesn’t recommend trying something too complicated if family is coming over. Especially your momma. This has not worked out well for me in the past, and my mother loves to tell everyone about the peanut butter and green beans.

She was on fire, literally. Confessions of a party planner #1

In this series, we’ll offer tips on how to plan parties. If you have questions about how to make your party a success, please feel free to ask here.

There are a lot of funny things that happen during parties that most people never get to see. Generally, there is a good lesson to be learned. One funny story that comes to mind happened at a high school reunion that I planned. The details have been changed to protect the identity of our guests. But certainly, the person to whom this happened might read this and hopefully will understand that the story in itself is so fantastic that it bears repeating.

So, the reunion was in full force — people seeing people that they hadn’t seen in twenty years. A lot of girls who might have been wallflowers in high school have “gotten their groove on” and are rubbing it in the face of any now-chubby, formerly skinny cheerleader that will make eye contact with them. All fun stuff. One girl disappeared with a certain fella that she had pined away for so long ago. Well, they began a swift courtship at the reunion, which led to a “heavy-petting/full-on” make-out session all within a 10-minute period. Ultimately, they ended up locking themselves in the bathroom to not make a scene.Or so they thought. All of the sudden, the door flew open with the girl screaming and running out of the bathroom with her hair on fire! Seemed things got so hot and heavy that she didn’t realize she was leaning on a table lined with votive candles. Thankfully, the girl was not hurt, more scared and embarrassed. She laughs about it now and still sports a fantastic bob cut. It’s all clean fun. The lesson learned? “Be keen on where you lean.”
