Mardi Gras has been around for centuries, becoming one of the biggest celebrations to date. It manifests the essence of New Orleans’ nickname, The Big Easy, and sums up the expression “laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll). The best thing about Mardi Gras, whether you are holding out for Fat Tuesday or catching every parade that rolls down the street, is the traditional food and spirits and the many, many excuses to throw a party!

Hosting a party for Mardi Gras can be done in many different ways. This year, I am throwing a Mardi Gras-inspired Sunday brunch for my friends before we all head out to enjoy the Krewe of Wrecks Mardi Gras Parade on Pensacola Beach. With everything that comes along with the parade, I thought it best to be as prepared as we could be by filling up on a great New Orleans-style brunch.

The beach parade kicks off at 2 p.m. To give all of us enough time to pack up and get over the bridge, I am going to have guests arrive at 10 a.m. for bloody marys, mimosas and beignets.

This year, I’m going to branch out and prepare some traditional brunch recipes with a Louisiana twist. We brunch enthusiasts all love the classic version of eggs Benedict, but to jazz it up a bit, replace the hollandaise sauce by sautéing up some delicious crawfish étouffée and pouring it over your Benedict. This will surely be a crowd pleaser.

Maybe Baby

— How commercialization ruined the King Cake.

Growing up we would always get a King Cake during Mardi Gras season and look for the baby. Whoever found the baby was supposed to have good luck for the year. The true history of the King Cake began a long time ago, and quite frankly it’s really scary.00190622

The abridged history of King Cake contains pagan rituals, sacrifices, and a coin hidden in the cake (instead of a baby). Find the coin and you get to be king for the year. But then they kill you.

As the years go by, the story gets nicer and the cake becomes more about fun and light-hearted good luck. The baby is supposed to represent baby Jesus and how hard it was for the three wise men to find him to present their gifts to him. Many Southerners ignore the religious reference altogether and just have fun finding the plastic baby and eating cake. It is Mardi Gras cake, so why make it serious at all?

The Merrill brothers received a couple of famous visitors for lunch the other day that they will not soon forget! American Pickers’ stars Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz dropped by The Pensacola Fish House for a bite and a look-see. Most folks in Pensacola know that the Merrills have quite an impressive collection of historical antiques and decorative pieces.

The pickers were treated to a tour of the restaurant. While some onlookers swear that they saw items from the Fish House loaded into the recognizable American Pickers’ transport van — Will, Burney and Collier Merrill declined to discuss what might have happened during the visit. They will only say that folks have to watch the show to find out! The show is rumored to air this spring. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything! Many Pensacolians know that on Friday nights at the Deck Bar there is likely to be a winging party. Friday, January 28, was no exception. The only difference was that this winging was for the squadron of John McCain IV. If you recognize the name, it’s because his father is John McCain III, more commonly referred to as United States Senator from Arizona and former presidential candidate.

On January 28, 2010, Senator McCain traveled to Pensacola, Fla., to attend the graduation of his son, Ensign John S. McCain IV, and watch him receive the Navy’s “Wings of Gold.”

The winging ceremony is a rite of passage for Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps aviators. During the ceremony, graduates’ families join them on stage and pin gold wings on the graduates’ uniforms. Senator McCain spoke at the graduation ceremony that day.

Later, the McCain family got together at The Pensacola Fish House restaurant for the winging party. Senator McCain took time to visit, shake hands and pose for pictures with diners of the Fish House.

Senator McCain is seen here with Fish House General Manager Jean Pierre NDione. “He was a very nice man. He took time to talk to and listen to the many guests here at the Fish House that came up to him to meet him,” said NDione.

Big game grub tips

Are you ready for some football … food?

It’s time to celebrate the Super Bowl with fellow fans. A super shindig requires at least one TV, comfy seats and, of course, good eats.

Melissa Martin, events coordinator for the Great Southern Restaurant Group, had plenty of tips to make your Super Bowl party a success.

For those hosting a Super Bowl gathering, she suggested first setting the stage with temporary team decor. ”You can’t get into the game mood while sitting on a pretty pink couch, so logo up your living room,” Martin said. “You can display team posters, flags or cushions. It’s a quick and easy way to decorate.”

Once the team colors are flying, you’ll need a game plan for feeding the masses, she said. Guests won’t be expecting a four-course meal, so keep it tasty, but simple. ”You want to serve easy, pick-up items such as nachos, (more…)

The fact is, on Valentine’s Day the burden of proof falls on the man. A woman desires her guy to wine, dine and romance her and create a magical moment in the process.
Especially if a marriage proposal is involved.

Tyrone Wicks knows all about planning such an important moment, down to the last romantic detail. Last September, the Pensacola field marketer pulled off the surprise of all surprises when over dinner he proposed to Bridgette Price, whom he had been dating for three years.

Wicks’ elaborate plan went off without a hitch as he wined, dined and proposed to Price at their favorite restaurant while six of their closest friends looked on. The height of the evening came near the end of a meal. Wicks stood up and announced that he had orchestrated the evening’s events just for her. (more…)

PERFECT PARTIES: Baby showers are not just for ladies anymore

Monday, January 24th, 2011

MELISSA MARTIN • SPECIAL TO THE NEWS JOURNAL • JANUARY 19, 2011

When guys hear the words “baby shower,” they picture a circle of woman sitting around oohing and ahhing over tiny outfits and rattles as they discuss labor tales. While they are not far from wrong, there have been some serious changes and modernizations in this type of gathering. More and more mothers- and fathers-to-be are throwing co-ed baby showers and creating parties that both of the expecting parents can enjoy. Planning a co-ed baby shower is easy and fun.

This co-ed baby shower party features Stewart's Fountain Classic sodas paired with a wedding almond cake with butter cream icing, and wedding almond cupcakes, vanilla cupcakes and red velvet cupcakes with butter cream icing by Oh Snap! Cupcakes and Gourmet Bakery. (Katie King/kking@pnj.com)

First things first. If you are planning a shower for a friend, talk to the mommy-to-be and see if she wants to make the shower co-ed. If she agrees, speak with her parents and make a guest list of couples and friends they want to invite. Once you know how many people to plan for, you can start working on the menu.

The “DO UNTO OTHERS” report

Monday, January 17th, 2011

We are delighted to report that we had a wonderful time at the Manna Pantry Fill a Bowl for Manna event on January 15. If you haven’t been to one before, mark your calendars for next year. Here’s how it works: Show up at Manna Pantry on 116 E. Gonzalez Street around 1:00 p.m. and purchase a handcrafted bowl provided by Pensacola State College. Then you take the bowl to different stations set up by local area restaurants like ours and sample some really incredible soups! We made a delicious black bean chili with a cilantro cream, and had a great time visiting with our friends like you who stopped by to say hello to us. There was also a great silent auction and a trivia contest emceed by our good friend Buzz Ritchie. Proceeds from the sale of the bowls as well as silent auction items benefit Manna Pantry directly. We were able help feed over 30,000 people in Northwest Florida. We like to feed people, so it was truly a win-win!

Lot's of beautiful handcrafted bowls to select from at the Fill a bowl for manna event.
