MELISSA MARTIN • SPECIAL TO THE NEWS JOURNAL • OCTOBER 13, 2010
Setting up a candy bar can add pop to your child's party. (Special to the News Journal)
As children growing up, we all had cake and ice cream on our birthdays. Our moms and dads grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and hung piñatas in trees — fairly typical celebrations.
However, I have seen parents jazz things up a bit by adding bouncy houses and blow-up slides. I am proud of our generation for taking things up a notch, but I want to help you turn it up even more by giving you tips and secrets to really impress not just the kids, but the whole neighborhood. Since the theme of the party really depends on the age of the child, today we are going to focus on those between the ages of 6 and 9.
Let’s touch on all the basics — food, drinks and atmosphere!
We’ll ditch the tired old standbys — hot dogs and burgers — and go for something more creative and interactive. Here are some great ideas to get you started.
Set up a taco bar. Include hard taco shells, soft flour tortillas, cheeses, salsa, meat, refried beans, shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. Provide plenty of napkins or paper towels and let the party guests make their own tacos. This will let them choose and eat exactly what they want.

 Pensacola's Historic Barkley House
By Melissa Martin
Choosing a venue for a wedding can be exhausting for the average person; however, lucky for me, in my profession as an event planner, I have already seen what Pensacola has to offer. We are fortunate to live in a town that is rich in history and culture. My fiancé, Josh, and I really wanted our families, who are from out of town, to see our beautiful city and why we love it here so much! This place has more charm than Prince Charming himself.

So, guys, you have finally found that special girl that makes your heart flutter, and you are ready to make her yours forever. Well, there is no greater moment in a girl’s life than when her true love gets down on one knee and in his own words asks her to be with him for the rest of their lives.
Kelley, a manager at the Fish House, finally found that guy! After falling in love, Tim went on to serve a tour in Afghanistan. While in the barracks, Tim would Skype Kelley while she was on her lunch breaks. He would talk about their future lives together and vowed that one day they would be husband and wife. I sit very close to her in the office on most days and saw her face light up every time she saw him on the computer screen. Thank goodness for Skype. Kelley was able to show him things like the new puppy she bought for him and the garden she worked so hard. It was also nice to have Skype when I wanted to show him what my own engagement ring looked like on Kelley’s finger—sorry, Tim, she’s still waiting for that! Watching them fall more and more in love and anticipating his return home, I found myself getting excited for her.

We have all seen the show “Say Yes to the Dress” on TLC. Like every girl, before I was engaged I dreamed about my wedding: the perfect dress that I would wear walking down the perfect aisle, in the perfect church, to marry the perfect groom! I have seen too many episodes of that show to admit but one thing I took from all those women in all those shows—I was not going to be one of those brides that listened to everyone from their cousin to their best friend to the future mother. I did not want to sit in a room with my friends and family clouding my thoughts about what I truly wanted in a dress! Everyone knows that when we go to a movie and watch the previews, suddenly we all become professional movie critics, telling the person next to us which movie is a bomb and which one you can’t wait to see. Well, woman in dress shops suddenly become Tim Gunn from “Project Runway” looking you up and down like you are a complete wreck! Well, no sir. That’s not for me!
So there I was in Puerto Rico—total time engaged less than 24 hours—and I looked at my fiancé and said to him I was going to grab us some drinks. As I walked out of the hotel, lo and behold, across the street was a beautiful bridal shop. I thought, “Oh, what the heck! I’ll just go in for a look.” No harm in that, right?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s finally happening. Yours truly, party planner extraordinaire, is taking the blissful dive into matrimony. You are all probably thinking how easy the planning of such an occasion might be for me, considering that is what I do!
Well, friends, if you think that, you would be wrong. Okay, so yes it is easy for me to know who is going to make my cake and who is going to do my flowers. I have seen lots of work done by the amazing women none other than Shannon Pallin from Fiore and Betty Weber who makes the best cakes in town. Catering, of course, will be taken care of by the masterful chefs here at the Fish House (we’re keeping all of the vendor venues local). Sounds like I have a pretty good plan, right?
Well, that isn’t the half of it. From booking the church to picking the wine and music, it can all get very overwhelming. Not saying it can’t be done, but the last thing a bride wants to worry about on her wedding day is whether the DJ shows (more…)

“Singin’, dancin’, betrothin’ and praisin’ the Lord” in the rain
I set up lots of parties for people every day. What makes a party great is the people throwing it! These particular folks were extra great. They taught me a very important lesson: When you are making the guest list, the first name on the list needs to be the Lord. In fact, after this event I decided to make Him my event-planning partner. I need Him to attend each event. Here’s an example of why:
When people hear they are invited to a Baptist wedding, one of the first things that pops into their minds is whether they’re gonna serve alcohol. Well, in this case, these were “good” Baptists who don’t drink. They loved good food, loved candy, and had the gift of dance.
Let’s back up.
