Jennifer Allen-McFarren

During the summer of 2010, the Grits Girl was visited by a young college student seeking an internship in the grits marketing department. The Grits Girl, who never had an intern before, thought to herself, Why not? And then accepted Jennifer Allen into the Grits-fold for a summer semester. We recently caught up with our former intern (now Jennifer Allen-McFarren). We found out what it’s like to be out of college and part of the workingman’s world, what kind of job she landed, why she thinks she needs a “chill-pill,” and most importantly, why she really loves grits.

lost in California

Lost in California - by Ashton Howard

Written by Shelley Yates – The Great Southern Grits Girl.

The Grits Girl recently sat down with local artist Ashton Howard to hear all about what inspires him and why he and his beautiful wife Emilie chose to move back to Pensacola and live. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see Ashton’s work, check out his website, www.ashtonhoward.com, before you read this article. There is a certain quality about his work that we find provocative, bold, balanced yet gentle, idealistic and dreamlike. Ashton creates beautiful images in tribute to the people and world around him that he draws his inspiration from.

GG: Did you pick art or did art pick you? Did you or do you have any other career aspirations?

A.H. I think the answer would be both! I have always loved to create and I have been into art since my early high school years. I started out drawing, spray-painting, and eventually was led to traditional painting on canvas by 12th grade. I knew that I had some talent and was producing some good art and that was fun. It was not until a few years later that a trip to California landed me a job as a surf instructor, and that is when I believe art picked me. I was in the right place, inspired by the right things, and through surfing met many influential people that were in the art industry—many aspiring and many successful artists, (more…)

Antonio and Bentina Terry

Antonio and Bentina Terry

The Grits Girl recently sat down with Ms. Bentina Terry, Gulf Power vice president, who talks about Pensacola being the most beautiful place that she has ever lived, her love of the law, her passion for economic development, what is on her iPod and why she really loves grits.

GG:  Thanks for talking with us, Bentina! You are an attorney who for works for Gulf Power Company, Vice President of External Affairs and Corporate Services. How did you go from law school to working for a utility company?

BT:  I went to law school with a goal to help people. I thought I would be a labor lawyer or a civil-rights attorney. I looked up to great lawyers like Thurgood Marshall and wanted to be a crusader for employees who were having problems at work, since people spend a majority of their time working. I realized that if I went to work for a big corporation, I could help teach companies the law and help them understand how to treat their employees. Working for a large company, I knew my contribution would have a greater impact.

I started off working for a large law firm that just happened to have Georgia Power and Southern Company as clients. I had other clients, but I started to learn about the utility business from there. I just found it to be very interesting. A lot of people think I just work for a utility company, but I think what we do is fascinating and so vital and important to the community. It is my passion. I love what I do, and I love the company I work for.

GG:  So through the Southern Company you got to Pensacola. Now that you are here, what do you think about this place?

BT:  It is really the most beautiful place I have ever lived. When I was thinking about moving to Pensacola, I listened to details about the city. When I heard that Pensacola had a symphony, an opera, a ballet, a children’s chorus, a little theatre and a university — from an arts and culture perspective, I thought, wow, this is not a small town! I was excited, and I said to myself, okay! This is the type of place I’d really like to live. (more…)

One of Pensacola’s most popular restaurants got picked.

Don’t worry. It’s not a crime.

On Monday, July 25th, 2011, the History Channel’s hit cable show “American Pickers” will feature a segment from Pensacola, focusing on The Fish House restaurant in downtown Pensacola.

In January, the show’s two stars, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, stopped at the Fish House for lunch on the way back from a South Florida “picking session” — featuring fearsome negotiating for antiques and collectibles.

The pair, who attract more than 5 million viewers per episode, didn’t go unnoticed for long.

Fish House employees recognized the two and told them that the three restaurant owners — brothers Collier, Burney and Will Merrill — had a large collection of items they might be interested in selling or trading.

Collier Merrill was in the restaurant, so he went to meet Wolfe and Fritz. He told them that he and his brothers had collected massive amounts throughout the years, from old movie props to stuffed animals to nautical items to props from old “Star Wars” movies.

Bruce Baldwin, Why I love Grits

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

The grits girl has decided to get out into the community to explore what makes us tick, who inspires us, and what’s going on around here. This new blog series will be called “Why I love Grits.” Does it really have to do with grits? The grits girl replies: Doesn’t everything? But truly, it’s just fun to meet people and find out what they like and what they spend their time doing. We hope you’ll agree.

Recently she had the pleasure to meet with Mr. Bruce Baldwin, president of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos AA baseball team to learn more about him, what he thinks about baseball, Pensacola, and, of course, grits.

GG: Who do you consider to be the best player in major league baseball today?

BB:  That’s a tough one. There are a lot of great players out there.

GG: That’s fair. What is your best memory from your twenty-five years with the Braves?

BB:   My favorite part of the job is watching talent develop. A great thrill for me, when I was with the Braves, was watching players like Chipper Jones, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and many others, begin their careers and watch their talents mature as they came up through the Braves system.

GG: So, for example, our championship team from UWF, the Argonauts, are young players full of potential and talent. Will they move through the process that you are speaking about?

BB:  Yes — I mean some will. Tens of thousands of kids want to play pro ball.  Only a small percentage is fortunate enough to have that opportunity. There’s a complex and deliberate process to professional baseball. There are steps that players go through that help them hone their skills and develop. That’s on purpose, as it’s a difficult process.  It takes more than natural talent, hard work, and determination.  Sometimes it’s as simple as being in the right place.  However, when they do make it — to be able to watch them grow — it’s incredible. That’s what I enjoy about the business side of baseball.

Kiss and Tell report.

Since we last published our report, we had a lot of interesting happenings at our house. Unfortunately, the end of April marked the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. A very unhappy anniversary for us all, and will be for the rest of our lives.

Be that as it may, we were fortunate enough to have our friends in the media return to help spread the word that our beaches are open, our seafood is safe and we are ready for a “do-over” this summer. Our good friend Joe Scarborough checked in with his good friend and “The Man” of our house, Mr. Collier Merrill, along with our esteemed Mayor, Mr. Ashton Hayward, and head of Florida’s Department of Agriculture, Commissioner Adam Putnam, to weigh in on the anniversary and give Joe’s vast MSNBC “Morning Joe” audience assurance that we are as “right as rain,” as we say here in the South.

We also were treated to visits by Captain Rick Murphy of the Fox Sports Florida Sun Sports show, The Florida Insider Fishing Report.” Captain Rick held a live taping of his hit fishing show right in our very own Sushi Room! Customers who are also fans of the show were
